What it's really like to
be a student at usc
Hi! My name is Gabrielle, I go by Gigi. I'm a senior at the University of Southern California, Roski School of Art and Design. I have been studying graphic design and photography while I have been a student here. A lot of the time, I freelance work for my social media business where I participate in collaborations with many different brands ranging from clothes, to beauty, to food. Anyway... I am going to tell you about what it is like to be a full time student at the University of Southern California in the year 2020.
Being a student at USC is kind of what you would think it would be. There's beautiful people everywhere, everyone is super involved on campus, and of course everyone always is dressed to the nines...well maybe not everyone! On a day to day, I wear leggings with a shirt / sweater and a light jacket. Typically, the art school and many of the classrooms on campus are freezing since it is hot outside year round, that's why I am so bundled up in the photo right next to this.
As an art student, you are required to take the fundamental courses when you first get to USC as a freshman / transfer student. You have to take a beginners drawing class, design fundamentals and digital tools. After that you can take pretty much anything that you want to, I chose to pursue the graphic design route with an additional concentration in photography. Something you should know if you are trying to be in the art school at USC is that it is extremely selective and conceptually based. What I mean by that is, 1. you have to have researched what you are doing and have it back up your work, 2. the project always has to have a meaning, and 3. you must be confident in explaining your ideas in writing and in presentations.
